Dear John,
Great news: over forty lawmakers have called on the Trump administration in two letters to suspend Iran sanctions to help combat the Coronavirus outbreak.
We know how difficult it is to watch this pandemic decimate the two nations that form our collective identity. But we can’t afford to give up hope. These vital measures increase pressure on the administration to offer real sanctions relief, rather than the half measures and spin we have seen to date, and provides space for increased international relief efforts.

The crisis in Iran continues to be a disaster, with nearly 3,000 deaths and 45,000 infected. Sanctions in Iran continue to make the crisis worse, slowing and blocking trade in medicine and medical devices while making it harder for ordinary Iranians to survive. That’s why the AOC letter - calling for bold sanctions relief - is so important.
Along with the Ocasio-Cortez letter, Sen. Chris Murphy led a similar letter in the Senate urging sanctions relief for both Iran and Venezuela, which was signed by ten more Democratic Senators. Outside of the U.S., the UN Human Rights Chief Michelle Bachelet has called for sectoral sanctions relief to help Iran and other nations combat Coronavirus. And, the United Kingdom, Pakistan and other nations have all urged the U.S. to ease sanctions on Iran.
We know that the road to relief will not be easy. The Trump administration is filled with officials who see the punishment of the Iranian people as a feature, not a bug, of the sanctions regime. Some, like Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, even think Coronavirus is an opportunity to attack Iran militarily. And many Members of Congress, on both sides of the aisle, still value sanctions more than the basic humanitarian necessities of the Iranian people. That's why we will continue our fight to ensure U.S. sanctions are suspended and the international community is able to work with Iran to battle coronavirus.
Together, we can ensure a brighter future for both the Iranian and American people. Let’s keep fighting together for a safer and more humane future.
Sincerely,
Jamal Abdi
