Energy & Commerce Committee Activity
In my Energy & Commerce Committee markup this week, we discussed a number of bills related to energy and health. We discussed my bill, the Affordable Air Conditioning Act, which reaffirms that DOE energy efficiency standards must be both technologically feasible and economically justified. This bill would prohibit the Secretary of Energy from directing or enforcing energy efficiency standards for room air conditioners that will result in additional costs to consumers, or that will not significantly conserve energy.
Health Subcommittee took on FDA's Overregulation
This week in my Health Subcommittee hearing, we discussed the Food and Drug Administration's proposed rule that would regulate Laboratory Diagnostic Tests the same as medical devices. This proposed rule is unrealistic, unnecessary and honestly makes no sense.
The FDA’s overly burdensome rule that would regulate laboratory tests as medical devices and have an estimated cost of $33.5 billion dollars to industry and would rapidly increase the number of applications going through the FDA – which will create significant delays while hampering innovation.
FROM THE CAPITOL
Crenshaw, Spanberger, Dean, Hunt Lead Effort to Target Online Sales of Illicit Drugs Laced with Fentanyl
This week I filed legislation this week to take on the online sales of illicit drugs laced with fentanyl. The Targeting Online Sales of Fentanyl Act requires the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to investigate the methods used to enable the online sale of fentanyl and assess efforts by federal law enforcement and online providers to combat the practice.
In 2022, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) seized more than 58 million fake pills containing fentanyl and 13,000 pounds of fentanyl powder — nearly 400 million deadly doses of fentanyl. The DEA has also reported that illicit drugs are increasingly being sold and distributed on social media platforms — with experts detecting approximately 10,000 new drug-related accounts each month. During just a two-month period in 2021, the DEA identified 76 cases where traffickers advertised drugs on social media. Additionally, 95 percent of websites selling prescription drugs are doing so illegally, according to the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP).

House Votes
We also held a number of energy related votes this week in the House, including passing a resolution Denouncing the Harmful, Anti-American Energy Policies of the Biden Administration. This resolution denounces the administrations’ attacks on domestic energy production and irrational Federal lands policies, including Biden’s recent actions to prohibit liquified natural gas exports.
The House also passed the Protecting American Energy Production Act, which prohibits the President from declaring a moratorium on the use of hydraulic fracturing unless Congress authorizes the moratorium. The bill also expresses the sense of Congress that states should maintain primacy for the regulation of hydraulic fracturing for oil and natural gas production on state and private lands.
