Federal Air Marshals (FAMS) are federal law enforcement officers, specifically trained in counterterrorism, who protect passengers and crew members from threats aboard commercial flights. The Biden Administration has diverted a record number of Federal Air Marshals to the Southern Border to perform administrative functions, leaving Americans unguarded on flights. This is unjustifiable and has created a concerning void in aviation security.
Just last week, FBI Director Christopher Wray said terrorism threats to the U.S. have hit a “whole new level” following the October 7th attacks against Israel. Given these heightened security threats, as well as the Biden Administration allowing unidentifiable illegal immigrants with de facto fake IDs to board airplanes and fly across the country, it is extremely concerning that commercial flights are going unguarded.
That's why I introduced the No FAMS at the Border Act. This bill will prohibit the Department of Homeland Security from deploying Federal Air Marshals to the border unless Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas certifies to Congress there is a crisis at the Southern Border.
I will continue to push back against the Biden Administration's disastrous policies that jeopardize Americans' safety both on the ground and in the skies. It's time President Biden stops undermining border security, enforces the laws on the books, and puts an end to this security crisis he has created. Iowans have had enough and I have too. We must put Americans' safety first.
