On Friday, I was glad to join a majority of my colleagues from both parties in passing a spending package that funds the federal government for the remainder of Fiscal Year 2024 while strengthening border security without cutting essential programs. The passage of this legislation comes after another package of bills was signed into law by President Joe Biden two weeks ago that included $14,490,287 in federal funding I was proud to secure for 15 local community projects located throughout the Eighth Congressional District. Keeping the federal government open and operating at full funding levels is critical, and had this bill not passed, important agencies and services like the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the Social Security Administration, and Medicare and Medicaid would have dramatically slowed. I am grateful to the leadership in both parties for keeping our government running and fully operational.

Ranking Member Krishnamoorthi testifies before the House Agriculture Committee on the need to protect American farmers and their property. (Click the image above to watch the Congressman’s full opening statement.)

On Wednesday, I testified before the House Committee on Agriculture on the importance of protecting American farmers and their products and intellectual property from foreign adversaries, including the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). As Ranking Member of the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the CCP, protecting American property and interests from interference from the CCP has always been our top priority. The bipartisan economic report released in December highlighted several critical agriculture-related areas the U.S. must address, including passage of the Securing American Agriculture Act, legislation Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) and Ashley Hinson (R-IA) adopted from the report.
However, while we must protect American interests from the CCP, it is also crucial that our efforts do not further fuel anti-Asian American discrimination and prejudice. While it is true CCP-affiliated entities have been taking troubling steps in recent years, including purchasing land near sensitive and military sites, the cure must not be worse than the disease, and laws such as Florida’s SB264 prohibiting Chinese nationals, regardless of their ties to the CCP, from purchasing any real property in the state are discriminatory and have real negative consequences on the Asian American community. The Select Committee on the CCP looks forward to continuing to work with the Agriculture Committee and others from both parties throughout Congress to make tangible efforts to protect Americans, their property, and the intellectual property from our adversaries.
