Daily Docket — Friday, March 22
Here are some updates.
* Voting rights and nonprofit groups moved ([link removed]) to defend Nevada's voter rolls from a lawsuit filed by the Republican National Committee seeking to purge voters. The groups argue the national Republicans' desired outcome will wrongfully cancel the registrations of eligible voters.
* Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers (D) signed ([link removed]) two bills into law that prevent cities from closing a significant number of polling places close to an election and make it a felony to physically assault an election worker.
* A voter filed ([link removed]) a lawsuit alleging that the at-large system used to elect members to the Cheektowaga Town Board violates the New York Voting Rights Act by preventing the town's Black population from electing their preferred candidates.
* Republican voters and right-wing advocacy groups appealed ([link removed]) a New York appellate court decision to strike down a New York City law that permits certain noncitizen residents to vote in local city elections. The court ruled that the law violates the state constitution.
* A troubling trend is emerging in the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The southern-based federal appellate court is rehearing its own pro-democracy decisions at the request of Republicans who are strident in their anti-voting philosophies. Here's what you should know. ([link removed])
Here’s what to expect coming up on Monday.
* It’s another order day for the U.S. Supreme Court. We’re on the lookout for a congressional redistricting case in Arkansas ([link removed]) .
* Monday is also the deadline for the plaintiffs in the South Carolina ([link removed]) redistricting case to respond to the defendant's request to the Court to allow the state to use its congressional map for elections this year given the court’s delay on a final ruling on the districts. Lower judges found that the map is racially gerrymandered.
