Friends and neighbors,

Concerning news from the Minnesota Senate this week. In the middle of the night, Democrats on the Senate Judiciary and Public Safety Committee rejected an amendment that would have protected religious freedom in our state.

Here is the background: The Minnesota Human Rights Act used to include key protections for religious groups. Democrats removed this protection last year, putting religious organizations at risk of legal consequences simply for operating according to their sincerely held beliefs.

My Republican colleagues on the committee attempted to restore these critical protections. Representatives from Catholic, Protestant, and Islamic institutions testified in favor of the amendment, united in the need to safeguard religious freedom.

It wasn’t enough. Democrats on the committee voted it down. If you are interested in watching what transpired, you can view the hearing here: https://youtu.be/N6jF17JP84s?t=21640

This decision poses a significant threat to religious liberty in Minnesota. Religious groups now face the possibility, perhaps even the likelihood, of a "revolving door" of complaints and legal action for simply adhering to their beliefs. Democrats are demanding conformity rather than respecting the various faiths of Minnesotans.

We cannot take this attack lightly. Religious freedom is a cornerstone of our nation, and we must remain vigilant in defense of our constitutional rights.

Please contact your legislators and ask them to uphold the religious liberties protected in our state and federal constitutions. Your voice matters.

Sincerely,

Glenn Gruenhagen
