Health Outcomes And Meals on Wheels
Meals on Wheels, funded through a range of sources including the Older Americans Act of 1965, provides home-delivered meals to more than 1 million older Americans annually.
In the March issue of Health Affairs, Sarah Walsh of Eastern Michigan University and coauthors explore associations between Meals on Wheels use and likelihood of continued community residence and risk for hospitalization ([link removed] ) for Medicare beneficies ages sixty-five and older.
They found that compared with nonusers, Meals on Wheels users were older, more likely to be Black, enrolled in Medicaid, and in poorer health.
They also conclude that Meals on Wheels users and nonusers are similarly likely to age in place, and Meals on Wheels use was marginally associated with increased likelihood of hospitalization, with stronger associations among frail older adults.
