Imagine for a moment that you’re transported right to the breathtaking, tranquil mountain forests of Northern California. The air is crisp, the wind is cool, and sunlight shimmers over the waters while wildlife roam freely along the shores.

This place exists — it is Sáttítla and the Medicine Lake Highlands, high in the Cascade Range in northeastern California.

For years, Sáttítla and the Medicine Lake Highlands have faced the looming threat of destructive energy development, putting at risk not only the natural beauty of the landscape and the cultural heritage of the Pit River Tribe and other Indigenous peoples, but also the intricate network of aquifers that supply pure water to millions of Californians. This includes communities and fields from the northern boundaries of the Golden State to San Francisco and beyond.

We can take action today on World Water Day to stand with the Pit River Nation and allies calling for Sáttítla’s protection. Protecting California’s public lands means protecting our water too.

The volcanically formed aquifers below the surface of Medicine Lake capture snow melt and store as much water as California’s 200 largest surface reservoirs. These aquifers deliver clean, cold water to the Fall River springs. They irrigate agricultural fields, quench the thirst of our cities, and sustain the delicate balance of ecosystems downstream.

Geothermal energy development is unfortunately contributing to ecological instability of the Medicine Lake Highlands, endangering a reliable source of pure water for millions of people. While we of course support renewable energy development like geothermal energy, we know it is possible without desecrating indigenous land for it. That’s why we’re fighting to designate this stunning landscape as a National Monument, safe from predatory development.

President Biden can use his powers under the Antiquities Act RIGHT NOW to create the new Sáttítla National Monument.
