Women can’t afford any more setbacks. Let’s move forward together, Dear John, Last month, when the Alabama Supreme Court determined that an embryo is a child under state law, our country's most extreme conservative anti-abortion Republicans celebrated. They celebrated because, even before the overturning of Roe, anti-abortion groups were strategizing about what could follow – namely, attacks on contraception and infertility treatments. Beyond these groups’ beliefs that women should not have autonomy over their own healthcare decisions, they also believe that infertility treatments like IVF are not ethical. When it comes to IVF, anti-abortion groups couldn’t care less about loving couples struggling to become good parents. Their primary concern is for the embryos that may go unused throughout the treatment. For those who know anything about the miracle of IVF treatment, this decision and way of thinking are abhorrent. And in the days following the decision, Republican lawmakers tried to backtrack and released statements of support for IVF, but when the US Senate had a chance to pass federal protections for IVF – Republicans stopped it. The majority of people in this country believe that a woman is the only person who should be making her health care decisions. Whether she wants to become a mother or not, the Alabama Court and conservative lawmakers and judges across the country cannot and should not make that decision for her. To protect women, we need Democratic majorities on all levels of government. And I am working to elect leaders who will help us flip the House and enact needed federal protections once and for all.
