John,
Last week, in an interview with CNBC, Donald Trump told voters “there’s a lot you can do … in terms of cutting” Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.[1]
This week, the Republican Study Committee, which represents nearly 80% of House Republicans, came out with a budget that would raise the Social Security retirement age, make annual cost of living increases stingier, and add means testing, doing away with Social Security’s universality. All told, the erosion in benefits proposed by Republicans would be equivalent to a $1.5 trillion cut to Social Security.[2]
Democrats on the other hand, have plans to protect and expand Social Security for generations to come.
In his 2025 Budget, President Biden calls for increasing Social Security benefits for millions of Americans and extending the lifespan of the trust fund by making millionaires and billionaires pay more of their fair share of taxes.[3] And, in both the House and Senate there are proposals to protect and expand Social Security: Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren’s Social Security Expansion Act, and Rep. John Larson’s Social Security 2100 Act.
Join Americans for Tax Fairness Action Fund and our national allies by adding your name today: We support Democratic plans to protect and expand Social Security by making millionaires and billionaires pay their fair share.
Once again, our earned benefits are on the ballot this election year and we need to continue reminding candidates and elected officials that by wide margins, Democrats, Republicans, and Independents support expanding, not cutting Social Security.[4]
We must continue to push back against the right-wing, Wall Street talking points that Social Security is going broke. Social Security has a $2.8 trillion trust fund and can continue to pay benefits in full for the next decade, at which point, if nothing is done, benefits would be cut by 20%.[5]
But the solution to automatic cuts isn’t cuts, it’s making the wealthy pay their fair share!
Add your name today in support of Democratic plans to protect and expand Social Security by making millionaires and billionaires pay their fair share.
Together, we’re fighting for the future of our earned benefits for generations to come.
