Dear John,

We are thrilled to share that Meredith Sumpter has been unanimously approved by the FairVote Board to serve as President and CEO of FairVote, effective April 1.

Meredith is an experienced nonprofit and private-sector leader who most recently served as CEO and President of the Board of both the Council for Inclusive Capitalism and the Coalition for Inclusive Capitalism. She holds advisory positions at New America and Harvard University and has a track record of working on U.S. policy issues at local, state, and national levels. Originally from Alaska, Sumpter served as an aide to Sen. Lisa Murkowski early in her career.

In addition to Meredith's appointment, we're sharing the news that Acting CEO Lan Nguyen, who served in that role starting last June, will depart on April 1 for an exciting new role as Chief Operating Officer of the National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum. Since starting with FairVote in 2019, Lan has played a centrally important role in our growth in impact. We’re incredibly happy for her as she takes on this new opportunity.

Read on for a few thoughts from Meredith, as well as FairVote co-founder and longtime leader Rob Richie.

A few words from Meredith Sumpter

I am thrilled to join FairVote as President and CEO. I believe deeply in our democracy and in what Americans can do when we feel engaged and empowered.

My work across the public and private sectors has been about creating value that benefits all people – whether advising U.S. government officials or private-sector CEOs, working in the halls of Congress, or leading nonprofit organizations.

That is the mindset I will bring to FairVote, building forward from the strong foundation put in place by Rob and the team. I am deeply motivated to work with this dedicated staff to advance meaningful reforms for a functional and representative democracy – one that delivers for the American people.

And I am excited to get to know each of you – the supporters and advocates who make this work possible. Whether you have been working for proportional representation since the 1990s or learned about ranked choice voting last week, I am grateful to have your support as I take on this important role.

As I prepare to hit the ground running on April 1, know how much I look forward to working with you toward our shared aim of better elections for all.

A few words from Rob Richie

Meredith Sumpter is exactly the kind of person we hoped the Board would find at the beginning of its CEO search, and I’m incredibly optimistic about what FairVote can achieve under her leadership.

I look forward to supporting Meredith in my position as Senior Advisor. I know that she’s stepping into a challenging yet incredibly rewarding role, leading our team at this moment of promise and peril for our republic. Meredith will bring her own unique experience, talent, and vision as FairVote rises to meet the moment.

I also want to thank Lan Nguyen, who has been such an incredibly effective and thoughtful partner in bringing change to FairVote over the past five years. We are a stronger, better-streamlined, and more resilient organization because of Lan. I couldn’t be happier for her as she takes on an exciting new opportunity that connects so deeply to her remarkable life story.

When I co-founded FairVote back in 1992 and became its first executive director, I had no idea of the long, sometimes circuitous, and incredibly rewarding journey I had begun. I’m so proud of what FairVote has accomplished and so grateful for the colleagues, partners, and supporters who have made it possible.

It has been inspiring to see the emergence of such a strong organization and reform movement – and the next step is for our work to grow even stronger under Meredith’s leadership.

Onwards!
