Friends,
?
This was an interesting week at the Capitol. The ridesharing issue is starting to boil over with Uber and Lyft threatening to leave the cities, one of my commonsense education bills was "not" included in the Education Policy Omnibus, and I was able to pass a spousal maintenance bill out of the Judiciary Committee.

*Uber/Lift bill *
This week the rideshare issue came to a head when it was announced that Uber and Lyft will cease operations in the seven-county metro area and Minneapolis respectively. The reason for this insanity is, simply, the Minneapolis City Council who passed an ordinance (and then overrode Mayor Frey?s veto) mandating an impossible level of driver compensation. For reference, a study found that drivers, as independent contractors and not full-time employees, make $53/hr while a passenger is in the car which is far above the minimum wage, obviously. House Republicans have introduced a bill to fix this issue but this week is deadline week which means that any bill that is to be moved must be heard in each policy committee in the bill?s body of origin by today.?
Without legislative action, the DFL will cause Lyft and Uber to cease operations in the metro area entirely, meaning that individuals who rely on these ridesharing services to access necessary services, such as our seniors or people who are disabled, will be left stranded.

*Bill Not Included in Larger Policy Bill*
This session I introduced a bill to roll back the policy that bans suspensions and expulsions for K-3rd graders and I was disappointed to learn this week that this proposal was not included in the recently revealed Education Policy Omnibus Bill. I?ve heard from teachers who say that they are unable to control their classrooms due to this new policy and I believe in empowering our schools and teachers in making the disciplinary decisions that are right for their unique situation. The current policy doesn?t give the teachers or parents any time to work out a disciplinary plan, nor does it allow teachers to take control of their classroom and foster the best learning environment possible for the rest of the class. I?d like to see this changed, but unfortunately, it looks like this proposal isn?t going to be making it out of committee this year.

*Spousal Maintenance Bill*
Earlier this week I worked to pass my bill HF 2895 [ [link removed] ] which would allow for retirement to be taken into consideration in cases of spousal maintenance. Specifically, it allows modification of the maintenance by considering whether or not the retirement is early or consistent with Social Security guidelines and the financial resources and assets available to each party. You can read the House Research summary of the bill here [ [link removed] ].
