1) The Justice Department Is the Worm in America’s Apple
It is a truism that in Washington, no good deed goes unpunished. And so we have the Biden Justice Department’s lawsuit against Apple for being a smartphone monopoly. It’s like a dystopian scene from Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged.

Has any invention so far this century contributed more to America’s economic prosperity, and our health, safety, and convenience than the iPhone? Steve Jobs’ once seemingly utopian vision that soon nearly everyone in America and on the planet would have access to this life-changing device has come to the fore. Nearly everyone – rich and poor – has a smartphone – with a price that is continually falling.

If this is the evil work of a “greedy monopolist” – we need an Apple disruptor in every industry.

Apple and its brilliant visionaries, engineers, scientists, and investors created this incredible device and industry. Not Al Gore. Not the federal government. Not taxpayers. There is no shortage of competitors that have come and gone.

The Biden lawyers object they have illegally achieved “market power.” The government now wants to regulate and dictate what apps and other services from rival companies must be available on the iPhone.

Of course, Apple has market power. So did Henry Ford. They CREATED the market. They are being called a monopolist on left and right even though Apple continues to lower the cost of phones and a multitude of other digital services - from games to maps to restaurant reviews to cameras, videos, and music. As the graph below shows, every time they introduce a new version of the iPhone – and build as it were, a better mousetrap - Americans scramble to buy them.

If consumers want a cell phone that carries certain apps, then the solution is to buy an Android or another iPhone competitor.

This lawsuit is a toxic assault on property rights, economic success, innovation, and our system of free market capitalism that gives the world life-changing products like smartphones in the first place.

2) In Maine a Citizen Revolt Against Gas Car Ban Succeeds
While Biden's EPA was rolling out his EV mandate this week, Maine Governor Janet Mills saw her own plan to adopt California's total ban on gas car sales rejected by the state's Board of Environmental Protection.

The board had been set to adopt the gas car ban in December when a major winter storm and widespread power outages caused a postponement. Three months later the board voted to REJECT the governor's proposal, even though Mills appointed every member of the board.

A citizen backlash made the difference.

"The Maine Board of Environmental Protection received nearly 1,800 comments from the people of Maine and nearly 84% were not in favor of this EV mandate," Maine Senate Republican Leader Trey Stewart told Fox News Digital. "Maine is far too rural with far too few charging stations, and many Mainers are also concerned about the reliability of these vehicles in our extreme cold weather months."

If this can happen in Maine, it can happen anywhere.

3) For the First Time Since the Black Death, the World's Population Is Set to Decline
A new report in the Lancet projects that the world’s population will soon begin declining for the first time since the 1300s, when the Black Death bubonic plague pandemic killed tens of millions.

The culprit this time is the continuing decline around the world in the average number of children born to each woman, known as the total fertility rate (or TFR). The world’s TFR already has fallen from about five in 1950 to 2.2 in 2021 and is now headed to below 2.1, the level at which the population replaces itself.

The left hates people - and they’ve long believed that this would be a great planet if there weren’t so many human beings. So they will applaud this trend.

A declining population means less prosperity. Contrary to doomsday claims, decades of scientific research show that population growth has been associated with sharply reduced famine, poverty, and climate-related deaths.

People are “the ultimate resource”: A growing population produces more innovation and prosperity. Malthus was wrong and so were the leftist doomsayers of the last six decades who preached overpopulation and predicted eco-catastrophe by 2000 and beyond.

4) Red States Are Winning the Millionaire Sweepstakes
The United States is home to a staggering 5.5 million millionaires, defined as those holding over $1 million in liquid assets. That is 37 percent of all the Million Club members in the world.

Inside the U.S., New York City, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Los Angeles have for decades had the most millionaires. They continue to lead, but the Sun Belt is quickly gaining on those centers, driven by the rise of remote work capability, good weather, and, of course, states with zero or low-income taxes and friendly job-creation policies.

Miami, Dallas, and Houston have each seen the number of millionaires living there jump by more than 70 percent in just the last decade. Scottsdale, Arizona, has seen a 102 percent increase, followed closely by Florida’s Palm Beach, which saw a jump of 93 percent over the past decade.

We find it astonishing that cities once known for their appeal to people of all income groups have given up so much of their competitive advantage. There is no debate: soak the rich taxes chasing millionaires to low-tax red states with more reasonable taxation and better living and earning conditions.

Our friend George Gilder noted many years ago: high taxes don’t redistribute income, they redistribute people.

5) The University of Illinois Declares Fauci an Ethics Hero
The state university of one of the most infamously corrupt states in the nation, Illinois, has presented an award for "ethical behavior and fair play in government" presented to… Anthony Fauci. You can't make it up. Since when is lying an ethical behavior?
