JOIN US TO RALLY FOR A HUNGER FREE PENNSYLVANIA!
On April 9, the Pennsylvania anti-hunger community will come together in Harrisburg, PA and hold a rally in the Main Capitol Rotunda at 10am to underscore the importance of adequate state funding for programs that support our neighbors experiencing food insecurity. We would love to see you there to show the Pennsylvania state legislature that hunger is an issue their constituents care about!
The goal of this rally is to ensure that our anti-hunger priorities are included in the final PA state budget, which the General Assembly is currently working to put together. After the rally we will visit our elected public officials and encourage their support of these priorities throughout their budget discussion process.
Learn more about how you can join the rally and the anti-hunger priorities we want included in the final state budget!
This week, our SNAP Hotline Counselor spoke with someone who had just recently arrived in the United States. Only certain non-citizens are eligible for SNAP benefits, and after speaking with this client, it was determined that they would not be eligible at this time. Our counselor was able to coordinate a food delivery for this client, and also gave them the contact info for our partner,Nationalities Service Center, who serves 5,000 immigrants and refugees in the Greater Philadelphia area each year. They offer services in legal protections, community integration, employment and more.
While not everyone who calls our SNAP Hotline is eligible for SNAP benefits, our counselors will do what they can to connect callers with resources they can access.
If you live in Philly, Bucks, or Chester County and would like assistance applying for SNAP benefits, completing your annual renewal, or help finding other local food resources, call our SNAP Hotline Monday – Thursday from 9:00am to 5:00pm and on Friday from 9:00am to 4:00pm at 215-430-0556. Asistencia también disponible en Español.
POLICY & ADVOCACY
Register To Vote: In order to participate in the Pennsylvania primary election on April 23, you must be registered to vote by April 8. Visit the ACLU of PA to learn about the upcoming election and your rights as a voter.
SNAP Interviews: Under the normal rules of SNAP, all applicants must complete an interview, either by phone or in person, before they are approved for benefits. For much of the past several years, this requirement has been suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Starting on April 1, 2024, Pennsylvania will no longer be able to waive the interview requirement, and all applicants will need to complete an interview before they are approved to receive benefits. This includes people applying for expedited benefits (emergency SNAP).
We strive to build a community where all people have the food they need to lead healthy lives. Hunger is preventable. Thank you for your continued support of our work!
