Are you a Silly Putty Christian?

By Rev. Dr. Linda Settles, Green Trails UMC in Chesterfield

"Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, and before you were born, I consecrated you ..." Jeremiah 1:5, NRSV

I remember playing with Silly Putty as a child. It was squishy and pliable. You could make something as simple as a ball or something as elaborate as a horse. Silly Putty brings me joy. To this day, I can't pass by a tin of it without playing with it. Joy!

Silly Putty is created from silicone polymers. But put it into the hands of a child, and it becomes whatever the imagination makes it into. It becomes a little lump of joy.

We are sort of like Silly Putty. Not that we are squishy, necessarily, although my grandson Eli tells me that his brother's tummy is squishier than his! But in the hands of God, we become pliable, moldable, formed into what God wants us to be.

I like the sound of that. God forming us according to God's Divine imagination, molding us into something awesome – into the image of Christ! As you journey through Lent, keep your mind focused on where God is taking you, not where you have been. Allow God to change your life, and it will bring you (and God) great joy, just like Silly Putty!

"For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life." Ephesians 2:10, NRSV
