Hello and welcome to my weekly update!
I thought pantomime season was long over, but the Conservative Party seems to want to make it a year-round event.
Utterly bereft of ideas, with Parliament rising early on a near-daily basis now, the Government seems intent on using the time to play out their own party political psychodrama.
It's time this nonsense stopped, the PM found some guts, and called a general election.

International law isn't just something to brush over, it is vital to maintaining the rules based order.
Breaking it is never acceptable, and Israel, along with all parties to the conflict in Gaza, should be held accountable for doing so.

Our business investment is consistently amongst the lowest in the G7, with growth stagnant as a result.
Nothing but bluff and bluster from the Minister in response.

People across the country, myself included, continue to suffer with the lasting effects of long Covid.
Government must ensure there are accessible routes back to employment, and give employers the tools they need to make workplaces safe for all.
A pleasure to back Marie Curie's #GreatDaffodilAppeal ([link removed]) , raising funds for the vital work they do in end of life care.
Lovely to also share memories of my dad with his old friend and colleague, the legendary Chris Kamara.
This Saturday at 8:30pm marks #EarthHour ([link removed]) , an opportunity for us all to take some time to think about the environment and our impact on it.
Whether switching off the big lights, going screen free, or connecting with nature, have a think about how you can play your part.
Andrew in the the constituency
What a fantastic morning with Councillor Allison Gwynne at Denton Community College for the inauguration of their first-ever School President.
Three students - Lydia, Peculiar and Isabel - have been campaigning across the college for the last few weeks and today’s the day they find out the vote results, but only after they make a final pitch to the invited guests. What incredibly confident and brilliant young ladies they are. I couldn’t have done what they did when I was at secondary school. They’re seriously impressive.
We were also entertained by two amazing dance routines: one performed by Year 9 and another by the Fusion Dancers.
And the winner is… ✨ PECULIAR! ✨
BIG congratulations to Peculiar and well done to Lydia and Isabel who were excellent opponents.
*PS, it’s Nosecco! 🥂
Really great to kickstart my campaign for the next General Election in the new Gorton and Denton seat at Longsight Market.
We’ve hit the ground running, knocking on doors in the Melland Road area and found lots of support for the brilliant Cllr Luthfur Rahman and Andy Burnham in the local and Mayoral elections on May 2nd, and a real mood for change and a Labour Government when the Prime Minister finally plucks up the courage and calls the General Election!
A big thank you to Councillor Abid Chohan for inviting me and Allison to The Diabetes Centrehttps://www.facebook.com/thediabetescentreuk?__cft__[0]=AZUyJC92RIH44ml4TTZhv32S6trU4FRj-kpb0G352sQ340Ji04QcMvRMdH_1D_jEbPw1cvYYDSEvngIhUGM2g9Wy4a2zk_A3HnnDn48tboaMb8xY0E8d-JSYKF4Mtyw43dowwNAiIPQ8AWk8Rvl46qoA&__tn__=-]K-RUK’s Iftar in Manchester.
During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims fast during the day and then break their fast at special gatherings with friends and family. Tradition has it that the Prophet Mohammed ate dates to break the fast, so we did as well. It’s customary to give to charity during this period too.
The Diabetes Centre is doing great work to raise funds amongst the Pakistani diaspora in order to provide vital public health services and diabetic prevention (type 2) and support (for types 1 and 2) for free in Pakistan and Azad Kashmir - things we take for granted in the UK thanks to our NHS.
It was a humbling evening - and the first of a number of Iftars across Manchester that I’ll be attending in the weeks ahead.
Ramadan Mubarak!
It was my great pleasure to join the Lord Mayor of Manchester, other civic dignitaries, community partners, school children and members of the public at the official opening of Gorton Hub.
This fantastic landmark building is the first phase of the regeneration masterplan for Gorton District Centre and it houses a brilliant new home for Gorton Library, the Adult Education service, Jobcentre Plus, One Manchester Housing, GP and other NHS primary care services and Manchester social care services all under one roof.
This is a huge testament to Manchester City Council’s determination to invest in public services and regeneration even during a time of real financial pressure in local government. And a BIG shout out to Councillor Julie Reid who ensured this project happened.
Thank you to Council Leader Councillor Bev Craig and Afzal Khan MP for inviting me to say a few words at the opening ceremony. So proud to be joining the Manchester family.
It was great to be out on the #LabourDoorstep ([link removed]) in Sale last weekend for our brilliant Parliamentary candidate Ben Hartley.
Given this is the seat of the current Tory 1922 Committee Chair, it was a fantastic response for Trafford Labour.
It was also good to join Team Denton South to help deliver their latest newsletter to residents.
If you live in Haughton Green, south Denton or the Yew Tree Estate, please keep your eyes peeled for yours!
Andrew in the the media
Culture is the very fabric of our communities.
It’s the stories we tell, the songs we sing, and the traditions we hold dear and pass down through the generations.
But we cannot let that mean that they exist purely as a “nice to have”, culture has a huge role to play in our wider society and economy, but it is an industry that has been badly neglected over the last 14 years of Tory rule.
The creative industries employ 2.4 million people across the UK, and are worth £125 billion, and rising.
We have always been proud both in our corner of the North-West, and across the whole country, of how our rich cultural heritage has such an impact around the world, but the stats really do bare that out.
The UK is one of only three net exporters of music anywhere in the world.
We have the second largest art market on the planet.
We are the world’s leading exporter of books.
Rather than letting so much of what we hold dear suffer from a chronic lack of support and investment and become a wild west for scammers, we should be celebrating the creative industries as what they are, the very best of British.
From our incredible home-grown film and television making, to grassroots facilities like the CREATE centre and the newly revived Denton Carnival, both Tameside, and the whole of the UK, have so much to offer.
It’s why I’m so proud that Labour’s Shadow Culture Secretary, Thangam Debbonaire, is working with Keir Starmer to put support for creative industries at the heart of Labour’s offer to the country at the next election.
Labour has committed to a Growth & Skills Levy, so the creatives of tomorrow get the support they need today.
We will crack down on late payments and unpaid internships, to ensure small businesses and workers in the creative industries have the backing they need.
We will also end the absolute scandal of genuine fans at live music or sporting events getting ripped off by extortionate resale prices on tickets, pricing people out of live entertainment.
For a country so rich in culture, we deserve so much better than a revolving door of Culture Secretaries and a government who just doesn’t care.
For all our sakes, a general election, and a Labour government, cannot come soon enough.
Proper public transport is transformative to local communities.
Not just in terms of getting people from A to B, important though that is, but for the wider impact it has across society.
The environmental benefits are clear, getting cars off the road, getting people onto more efficient, quicker, and sustainable trains and busses.
The economic impact, of bringing people into our town centre, connecting different parts of our region, encouraging investment and job creation.
It is an absolute no-brainer, though one seemingly oblivious to the Conservative Party.
After 14 years of Tory rule, the best public transport in the north has got from Westminster are badly drawn lines on a map, masquerading as a “Network North” plan.
Here in Stockport this week, we showed Westminster how its done, with the opening of the fantastic new Stockport Interchange.
Delivered on time, and on budget, ready to make an immediate impact, it shows what proper joined up working can deliver when applied to infrastructure projects.
The initial regeneration work for the Interchange project was started under a Labour administration and has received vital support from our Labour Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham.
As Mayor Burnham has done, immense credit and tribute must also be given to the late Sir Bob Kerslake, who played a central role in the delivery of this project.
Through his role of chair of the Mayoral Development Corporation, the project will be a lasting part of Bob’s legacy, and his immense contribution to Stockport and Greater Manchester.
With 18 bus stands allowing for 164 departures per hour, the Interchange it well placed to have an immediate impact, but the growth of our public transport infrastructure need not stop here.
I am very pleased to have heard commitments from Mayor Burnham to work alongside Stockport Council to deliver Metrolink to the town centre.
The “Next Stop Stockport” campaign, which I have been a keen champion of, will be another significant boost to the town, and help properly link up Stockport with the rest of Greater Manchester.
This project should be a go-to example of how public transport infrastructure doesn’t have to be a burden and thrown out in a mess, like the absolute dog’s dinner the Tories made of HS2.
To borrow a much maligned phrase, Stockport Interchange really is “Levelling-Up” in action.
