WIIS Celebrates Women’s History Month

On March 4, 2024, WIIS was invited to the White House, where First Lady Jill Biden and Secretary of State Anthony J. Blinken hosted the International Women of Courage award ceremony. Integrating Gender Perspectives in the U.S. Global Fragility Act: Innovation and Implementation

On March 8, 2024, in celebration of International Women’s Day, WIIS and the Embassy of Liechtenstein held an in-person discussion with with Ambassador Georg Sparber (Liechtenstein), and Assistant Secretary of State Anne Witkowsky (Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations) and an expert panel on the U.S. Global Fragility Act (GFA) on approaches to integrating a gender perspective in the 10-year strategy plans of the GFA’s priority partner countries and region. Panelists included Dr. Jennifer Cooke (Director, Institute for African Studies, Elliott School of International Affairs), Elizabeth Hume (Executive Director, Alliance for Peacebuilding), Tahina Montoya (Defense Fellow, WIIS and Political/Military Analyst, U.S. Air Force Reserves), and Dr. Gordon Peake (Senior Advisor for the Pacific Islands, U.S. Institute of Peace).

** CSW68: Financing Peace for Gender Equality: Advancing the Financing of the 1325 Agenda
------------------------------------------------------------

On March 14, 2024, WIIS, the NGO Committee on the Status of Women, NY, the Network for Religious and Traditional Peacemakers, Soka Gakkai International, and the United Religions Initiative hosted an official parallel event during the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68) held in New York City. This session explored the future of the WPS agenda in light of the 25th anniversary of the passage of UNSCR 1325 in October 2025 by exploring measures to increase its financing. Speakers included Hilary Anderson (Senior Gender Advisor, CIM, Organization of American States), Ariela Blätter (President & CEO, WIIS), and Esther Oman (Executive Director, Reach Out Cameroon). This discussion was moderated by Anoush Baghdassarian (Founder, ReRooted Archive).

CSW68: Advancing Gender Equality through the Implementation of Gender Perspectives in Military Institutions

On March 14, 2024, WIIS and the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence held a private roundtable discussion at CSW68. The discussion centered around advancing gender equality through the implementation of gender perspectives in military institutions. Speakers included Ariela Blätter (President and CEO of WIIS), Joanne Crouch (Human Security Policy Lead UK Ministry of Defence), Lt. Col. Duilia “Dui” Turner, USAF (Ret.) (Senior Fellow, WIIS), Lt. Col. Charmaine Geldenhuys (UK Military Officer and Former Gender Advisor, MONUSCO), Dr. Sellah King’oro (Gender Advisor, British Peace Support Team (Africa), Dr. Megan Bastick (Gender and Security Fellow, Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance), Lt. Col. Heloise Goodley (UK Military Officer, UN Advisor on Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict), and Colonel Carl Harris (UK Military Advisor to the UN) and many others.

“Deploying Feminism: The Role of Gender in NATO Military Operations”

A Book Discussion with Author Dr. Stéfanie von Hlatky

On February 29, 2024, WIIS hosted Dr. Stéfanie von Hlatky (Canada Research Chair on Gender, Security, and the Armed Forces, Queen’s University) and Inga Samoškaitė (Assistant Director, Transatlantic Security Initiative, Atlantic Council) for a detailed account of how WPS norms are militarized and put at the service of operational effectiveness in NATO. Dr. von Hlatky argued that an adjustment to integrating the full spectrum of WPS principles and norms is necessary for gender equality to become a true planning priority.

WIIS Italy at CSW68: Women Mediating Across the Triple Nexus: Addressing Socio-Economic Challenges Resulting from Climate Change

On March 20, 2024, WIIS Italy hosted their official side event for CSW68. This event brought attention to the way in which women mediators’ actions across the Triple Nexus accelerate the achievement of gender equality, address poverty and economic inequality, and empower all women mediators on the frontline of the climate crisis. Speakers included H.E. Mr. Maurizio Massari (Permanent Representative, Permanent Mission of Italy to the UN), H.E. Ms. Elizabeth Kabua (Permanent Representative, Permanent Mission of the Marshall Islands to the UN), Veena Singh (Member, Pacific Women Mediators Network), Sophia Papastavrou (Member, Mediterranean Women Mediators Network), Sarah Hendriks (Director of the Policy, Programs, and Intergovernmental Division, UN Women), and Alexandra Fong (Chief for Policy and Guidance, UN Department of Peacebuilding and Political Affairs).

WIIS Italy Celebrates International Women’s Day with the Organization for Security and Co-Operation in Europe

On March 8, 2024, Loredana Teodorescu (President, WIIS Italy) spoke at the Organization for Security and Co-Operation in Europe’s International Women’s Day event, exploring how networks of women influence all aspects of peace and security.

WIIS UK International Women’s Day: Redefining Career Pathways in Defence and Security

On March 8, 2024, WIIS UK and the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) hosted an event to learn from women in all defense and security sector career stages. Speakers for the event included Louise Marie Hurel (Research Fellow, Cyber RUSI), Juliana Suess (Research Analyst and Policy Lead, Space Security, Military Sciences, RUSI), Pia Hüsch (Research Analyst for Cyber, Technology and National Security, Cyber, RUSI), Arzu Abbasova (Research Analyst, CFCS, RUSI), Lauren Young (Research Fellow, Organised Crime and Policing, RUSI), Alana Putze (Senior Manager for Corporate Partnerships, CFCS, RUSI), Darya Dolzikova (Research Fellow, Proliferation and Nuclear Policy, RUSI), Maria Nizzero (Research Fellow, CFCS, RUSI), Anna Löfstrand (NextGen Programme Executive, RUSI), Chineme Ene (Policy Officer West Africa, FCDO), Dr Nikita. WIIS Spain: “Sharing (views on) Security” at the Center for Higher National Defence Studies

On January 31, 2024, WIIS Spain (SWIIS) held a presentation of the newest edition of “Sharing (views on) Security” in partnership with the Department of National Security of the Presidency of the Government, the Armed Forces, the Civil Guard, the Police, and representatives from academia. They were joined by Lieutenant General Miguel Ballenilla (Director of the Centre for National Defence Studies) and Marian Caracuel Raya (Director, SWIIS). Dr. José Díaz Toribio (Professor, ASOCIACIÓN DE DIPLOMADOS ESPAÑOLES EN SEGURIDAD Y DEFENSA) moderated the roundtable while Ms. Meritxell Batet (Former President of the Congress of Deputies) gave the final address.

WISCOMP Celebrates 25th Year Anniversary

In July 2024, WISCOMP (WIIS India) will celebrate 25 years of action and commitment towards nurturing constituencies of peace and promoting cultures of pluralism and coexistence in South Asia. Originally established as an initiative of the Foundation for Universal Responsibility of His Holiness The Dalai Lama, for the past two decades WISCOMP has grown into an integral agency of support and promotion of women’s leadership.

NATO Launches Challenge for Girls and Women in Science

NATO launched a global challenge for women and girls in STEM. The WGS24 scheme, launched in anticipation of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, can interest students and early career professionals. Participants must submit a short research proposal addressing one of NATO's Science and Technology (S&T) priorities, guided by the following question: What research idea would you like to see NATO realize over the next five years? The call for proposals will close on April 21, 2024.

The Catherine M. Kelleher Fellowship for International Security Studies

The Catherine M. Kelleher Fellowship for International Security Studies supports an exceptional graduate student pursuing their master’s or doctoral degree at the University of Maryland School of Public Policy. Professor Kelleher founded WIIS in 1987 and is also a founding faculty member of the University of Maryland School of Public Policy, where she also founded the Center for International and Security Studies at Maryland (CISSM). Throughout her policy and academic careers, Professor Kelleher was a champion for women in the field of international security policy. This fellowship is intended to ensure that future generations benefit from the kind of support that she gave to countless people in the field today. Catherine M. Kelleher passed away on February 15, 2023.
