Triplets look forward to a future of healthy sight

Hi Friend,
For Women’s History Month, we want to celebrate the amazing women who helped three triplets avoid a lifetime of blindness.
We first met the triplets – Ester, Sara, Ruth – and their mom, Elisa, at our partner hospital in Peru in 2019. The triplets were born three-weeks premature and at risk of developing retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a condition that causes irreversible blindness if not treated urgently.
Dr. Luz Gordillo is a long-time Orbis partner who has dedicated her life to treating babies with ROP and screened the three girls after they were born. Ester showed no signs of ROP, while Sara was diagnosed with a stage one case that cleared up on its own. Ruth, however, had a more advanced stage of ROP. Without immediate treatment, she would lose her sight. Dr. Gordillo performed the laser treatment Ruth needed to live a happy and healthy life.
We then met the girls again in 2021 and the triplets were healthy, thriving two-year-olds. Since then, their mom Elisa makes a six-hour round-trip twice a year to see Dr. Gordillo for critical checkups to ensure the triplets are thriving.

Now that the triplets are a little bigger, Elisa has high hopes for their future, “As a mother, I would like my sons to be professionals and my girls to be professionals too. I hope my girls can succeed,” she says.
We’d like to say a huge thanks to Dr. Gordillo and Elisa for being so dedicated to the triplet's wellbeing, and of course, you, our amazing supporters, for helping save the sight of these three wonderful little girls.
