Dear Friend,
We are living through an unprecedented and terrifying moment. As the COVID-19 pandemic sweeps through the world, millions are at risk. Some of the most vulnerable people among us are incarcerated in private prisons throughout the United States.
Companies like GEO Group and CoreCivic continue to use tax dollars—our money—to exploit the pain of Black and Brown people imprisoned in their facilities. We know that even as governments made dramatic cuts to other critical areas, they continued pumping money into private prisons, allowing GEO Group and CoreCivic to profit, while prisoners suffered in overcrowded, unsafe, and sometimes deadly conditions.
That’s why we’re calling on state and federal lawmakers to end the use of private prisons and protect incarcerated people from COVID-19.
Several prisons are already reporting outbreaks of COVID-19 and some prisoners have succumbed to this horrible disease. Make no mistake, COVID-19 outbreaks inside private prisons is a major health risk to prisoners and staff. Now is the time to ensure those individuals are safe and hold GEO Group and CoreCivic accountable.
