Representative Sara Jacobs was elected into office in 2020, making history as the youngest California representative in Congress at the age of 31. Now in her second term, Rep. Jacobs is the youngest member of Democratic House leadership at the age of 35.
Senator Rochelle Nguyen also won her election to the Nevada State Senate in 2020, making history as the first Democratic Asian American/Pacific Islander (AAPI) to serve in the Nevada Legislature.
These lawmakers came into office right before Roe v. Wade was overturned by the ultra-conservative Supreme Court, when women across the nation were facing countless new hurdles for reproductive rights and care. One of the new problems women face is data brokers selling sensitive healthcare information that could be used against women in states that ban or restrict abortion, and even data that regards minors.
With reproductive privacy at risk, Representative Jacobs sought to combat the policing of data from period tracker apps with the My Body, My Data Act of 2023. This bill would create a new national standard for protecting personal reproductive health data to prevent information from being disclosed or misused. While this bill did not pass, Rep. Jacobs has brought awareness to new challenges from the overturning of Roe, and the Biden Administration has taken further steps to protect reproductive and sexual health privacy.
