Dear Friend,
This week, I was proud to vote to pass H.R.7520, the Protecting Americans’ Data from Foreign Adversaries Act. This bipartisan bill would protect our privacy and our national security by prohibiting the sale of our data to foreign adversaries, including China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran.
Companies have access to more of our personal data than ever before, including health, financial, and biometric information. When companies sell this data through data brokers, it can land in the hands of foreign intelligence services, militaries, or companies controlled by foreign governments, enabling intrusive surveillance and other violations of privacy.
The United States does not currently have a comprehensive federal privacy law to limit the amount and types of data that can be collected on consumers, protections to allow individuals to prohibit data brokers from collecting their information, or restrictions on who data brokers can sell this information to. The Protecting Americans’ Data from Foreign Adversaries Act would address this gap by preventing data brokers from selling Americans’ sensitive information to foreign adversaries, including geolocation information, information on children, financial information, and health and biometric information.
This legislation is a crucial step to protect Americans’ privacy and safeguard our national security, and I call on my Senate colleagues to pass it without delay. |
