Patriot, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is scrambling to RAM a budget deal through the House, and he’s bending over backwards to accommodate DEMOCRATS with their pork-barrel spending (practically funding their campaigns!) to do it. “When we’re winning, why would we worry about [the Republicans] flailing? Now we’re able to get this across the
finish line largely intact, with very little damage, given we’re not in charge. That’s like a double win, so I’m happy.”
—Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI), former Progressive Caucus leader As soon as this spending debacle is done, Congress is taking another vacation (their third since Christmas vacation). . . And then the next “emergency” will be staring at them: renewal of the unconstitutional mass surveillance program, Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Johnson says he will have a standalone vote on renewing it when they come back from their Easter Break. He has not said which bill he plans to have a vote on. But based on Mike Johnson’s past behavior – including tacking a short-term extension to the spying program to the National Defense Authorization Act last December in violation of the House’s own rules – it’s reasonable to conclude he plans a vote to renew and possibly even expand the warrantless surveillance program. . . That is, unless with your help, I can deliver a massive stack of signed petitions to him before they adjourn for Easter break. According to media reports, Johnson said his “current” plan is to proceed with the weak bill he put forth in February – H.R. 7320. But that bill offers NO protections for Americans from unconstitutional spying . . . unless it is amended on the House floor. Speaker Johnson needs to know putting any bill on the floor to renew Section 702 with no real changes is unacceptable. Fortunately, we know your messages make a difference. Remember, just a month ago, Johnson was talking about stuffing a Section 702 extension in the “must-pass” budget bill – but then he backed off right after we hand-delivered stacks upon stacks upon stacks of your petitions to Republican leadership. That’s why it’s so critical you contact Speaker Johnson again and DEMAND he put forward the House Judiciary Committee’s meaningful bill to END warrantless mass surveillance! After you sign your directive to Speaker Johnson, I hope you’ll go one step farther: support C4L with a contribution, so we can continue to inform, mobilize, and deliver your directives to lawmakers. But even if you cannot make a donation today, please know we always deliver every signed petition, whether or not you contribute afterward. Every voice counts, including yours. I hope you’ll make certain Mike Johnson hears from you by signing your directive. For Liberty, John McCardell Executive Director Campaign for Liberty P.S. The U.S. “intelligence” community, and especially the FBI and NSA, illegally rummaged through millions upon millions of phone calls, emails, and text messages of innocent Americans without a warrant. The “intelligence” community has admitted to looking up dating prospects, political enemies, and grassroots activists. You and I have known this for years despite the lies of former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, FBI Director Christopher Wray, and dozens and dozens of other “intelligence” officials. They always claim they are fixing things internally, but the abuses continue. So you and I must put an end to it now! We must DEMAND our lawmakers restore our constitutional privacy protections and STOP the 702 abuses before it gets renewed or even expanded. That’s why I’m counting on you to please sign your STOP THE SURVEILLANCE STATE directive to House Speaker Mike Johnson immediately, before they recess for another two weeks.
