Interview with CHBA BC CEO Closes Out CKNW's Gimme Shelter Series

On Friday, CKNW wrapped up the CHBA BC-sponsored Gimme Shelter limited series on the Mike Smyth Show. Over the past five weeks, the series examined the housing crisis that has impacted not only Vancouver but the whole Lower Mainland.

The series finale featured an interview with CHBA BC CEO, Neil Moody who discussed how a lack of skilled trades has impacted the pace and cost of construction. The interview also covered how municipal and provincial approval processes have slowed homebuilding.

Residential Enclosure Retrofits: A Hands-On Experience (Nelson)

This new training course specifically focuses on the limitations and challenges contractors face when undertaking enclosure retrofits on existing homes. Contrary to new builds, retrofits come with many challenges from unknowns, including as-built products and materials, occupied conditions, phasing limitations, and existing structural configurations. These challenges must be met with creativity, adaptation, and a strong knowledge of best-practice retrofit solutions.

As part of the Kootenay Clean Energy Transition project, the Community Energy Association is offering a $100 subsidy for participants from the Regional Districts of Kootenay Boundary, Central Kootenay, and East Kootenay, and those joining from the Columbia Basin Trust Region.

Finalists Announced for the 2024 CHBA National Awards for Housing Excellence

This year's finalists for the CHBA National Awards for Housing Excellence have been announced! The competition is Canada's premiere housing awards, recognizing the best in new homes, renovations, community development, and residential marketing. This year's competition received over 900 entries and was judged by nearly 300 member volunteers.

Winners will be presented at an awards gala on May 10, 2024, during CHBA's Home Building Week in Canada.

Buildforce Canada Report Gives Associations a 'Leg to Stand on' for Immigration Reform

A new BuildForce Canada report brought together different groups in the construction industry, including the Canadian Home Builders' Association to provide some guidance as to the kinds of reforms needed to the current immigration system to help bolster the sector.

The report presents recommendations to ensure the construction sector can better access skilled workers from abroad to address projected shortages of skilled labour created by rising construction demands and changing demographics.

Public Review on the B149 2025 Gas Code Series

The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) is now inviting public feedback on the draft of the next edition of the CSA B149 series which includes:
  • CSA B149.2-25 — Propane storage and handling code. Consultation is open until March 25, 2024.
  • CSA B149.1-25 — Natural gas and propane installation code. Consultation is open until April 29, 2024.
This is an opportunity for stakeholders in the homebuilding industry to suggest changes to the code at the national level before the code is published.
