Millions of Americans are thinking about student debt as they prepare to head to the ballot box this year — especially women of color, who are disproportionately impacted by this burden.

Let’s take a look at the numbers. 👀

Forty-three million Americans currently have student loan debt, collectively owing $1.766 trillion. Women hold 66% of all student loan debt, and 41% of women undergraduates take out student loans, compared to only 35% of male undergraduates — but there's more.

The gender gap widens for women of color, who have almost twice the amount of student debt as white women. In the first 12 years of loan repayment, on average, Black women's debt grows 13% — while white women’s debt shrinks by 28% and white men’s debt shrinks by 44%.
