Last week, we officially launched the next stage of our global campaign - #SalvemosPuntaConejo - to protect and preserve Oaxaca’s Punta Conejo and the entire surf ecosystem around it. 
 

We first began our work in Punta Conejo in 2019, when local partners alerted STW to a massive industrial port project, which threatens the entire coastline. 
 

Our team quickly launched an international petition to get the word out. But the awareness campaign was only the beginning. Since then, we have been working to find a way to legitimately preserve Punta Conejo. 
 

But how do you actually protect a wave?
 

By finding a solution. 
 

Over the last 4 years, our staff and local partners have hosted over 25 community workshops around Salina Cruz. We collected input and concerns, carefully recorded data, coordinated participatory mapping sessions and held community-wide votes. We met with government officials, advocating for state-wide surf ecosystem conservation, while organizing at the local level. 

Now, we have our solution: we are proposing the first-ever coastal "Áreas de Protección de Flora y Fauna" in Oaxaca for Punta Conejo.
 

This official designation will safeguard over 3,500 acres of land, 6.5 miles of coastline including 3 surf breaks (Punta Conejo, Punta Chivo and Punta Escondida), and 1,277 acres of mangrove forest. It would also conserve habitat for over 40 species of bird and 4 species of turtle, several of which are endangered.
 

There's no one way to protect a surf break and the surf ecosystem. Every problem needs a unique solution. And this is how we can protect Punta Conejo for future generations.
