Implicit and explicit racism has often historically driven government
responses to urgent health situations. As the COVID-19 public health
emergency
[link removed]
intensifies, Race Forward calls on local and state governments and those
who are managing emergency responses to closely consider the impact
[link removed]
that this disease, and the response to it
[link removed]
, may have on people and communities of color.
Systemic racism
[link removed]
in the United States has always been present, and can have significant
ramifications
[link removed]
as we navigate through this public health crisis. Race Forward remains
steadfast in our commitment to advancing our racial justice and equity
work. To best do this, we will continue working at the community and
institutional levels to identify and adapt to new methods of engaging
and community-building in digital spaces.
Race Forward has shifted the way we do our work in order to prioritize
the health and well-being of our staff, our partners, and the
communities we serve. And, when the time is right, and circumstances are
more secure, we will reconvene, recharge, and rebuild. As an
organization, as a movement, and as a nation, we must love and support
each other and make decisions based in science and compassion – not out
of fear.
Race Forward's statement on the Coronavirus Emergency, official
response, and its impacts on communities of color
[link removed]
Though there will be substantial and unprecedented challenges in the
next few months, we, along with our partner organizations, have already
begun mobilizing:
The Racial Equity Anchor Collaborative has released a statement in
solidarity with the Asian American Community: "Civil Rights and Racial
Justice Organization Denounce Discrimination against Asian Americans and
Urge Unity in Responding to Coronavirus Pandemic"
[link removed]
.
Colorlines has continued coverage

of COVID-19, which includes pieces like "Self-Love in the Time of
Coronavirus"
[link removed]
and "Ring the Alarm: COVID-19 Presents Grave Danger to Communities of
Color"
[link removed]
.
Because now is the time to be bold about saving lives charting a path
toward a healthier, more equitable future. Race Forward has signed onto
[link removed]
the People's Bailout's 5 Principles for Just COVID-19 Relief &
Stimulus
[link removed]
.
Watch the replay of the Tribal Leader Town Hall on COVID-19
[link removed]
webinar by fellow racial equity anchor organization, National Congress
of American Indians
[link removed]
and the National Indian Health Board
[link removed]
, which discussed how organizations are responding to the fight against
COVID-19.
Living Cities
[link removed]
, recently published "An Invitation to Center Race in Government
Responses to COVID-19"
[link removed]
on their blog, offering a set of opportunities for public servants to
share and align around their responses to this moment and navigate the
complexities together.
Race Forward remains committed to these efforts, today and everyday, in
this crisis, and in all of our actions. In the words of racial justice
advocate and philosopher Grace Lee Boggs

: "the only way to survive is by taking care of one another."
In solidarity,

This month we hear from our Director of Policy and Strategy, Leah Obias

!
"I've been loving the poem Wash Your Hands, by Dori Midnight
[link removed]
. It brings so much transformative and righteous awareness to this very
simple act that I hope to never take for granted again. The poem is
printed and hangs above the sink of Third Root Community Health Center
[link removed]
, a vital social justice healing space and worker cooperative in
Brooklyn. While I've seen pieces of the poem on social media, I first
read the whole poem there a couple weeks ago before the COVID-19 public
emergency forced it to close its doors temporarily."
