Governor Greg Abbott has issued a Proclamation for Brain Injury Awareness Month - March 2024.
An acquired brain injury is brain damage caused by events after birth, rather than as part of a genetic or congenital disorder. These include strokes, brain illness and other brain injuries. They differ from degenerative brain conditions, such as Alzheimer?s or Parkinson?s disease.
Some of the effects a brain injury can have include cognitive effects, sensory effects, emotional effects, and physical effects. Challenges with functioning may not only be to the brain, but to the senses, the nerves, and the body.
The number of people diagnosed with a brain injury each year is more than those diagnosed with Alzheimer's, breast cancer, HIV/AIDS, prostate cancer, lung cancer, and ALS combined. Here at home, 144,000 Texans sustain a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) every year. Of those, 5,700 Texans are permanently disabled every year from a TBI.
Brain Injury Awareness Webinar and Conference
To commemorate Brain Injury Awareness Month, the Health and Human Services Brain Injury Programs are hosting the free webinar below and a full day conference focusing on Adapting Together.
Join HHSC for an engaging online webinar focusing on the education and increasing awareness within support systems, and the various ways survivors, care partners, and healthcare professionals can support each other through the process. Working and adapting together after a brain injury can help each person through their unique journey knowing they are not alone. The full day conference will provide information about connecting to a diverse group of people, resources, and the importance of these connections along the pathway to life after a brain injury.
All activities are free and open to the public. Continuing education credits for multiple disciplines will be offered.
