PPADMV Newsletter March 2024
Dear PPADMV Supporter,
March has been an eventful month for your friends here at PPADMV. With two critical Supreme Court hearings and other upcoming events, we're starting springtime in the spirit of solidarity, support, and a refusal to back down from defending our rights.

COURT CASES
The PPADMV team is closely following the cases below, and mobilizing to defend the fundamental rights at stake in each!

1. Mifepristone case: The bogus case against medication abortion

Background: First and foremost, mifepristone is still legal. This case represents yet another effort by anti-abortion activists to intervene in private medical decisions between patients and their doctors. This time, they're attempting to challenge the FDA's longstanding approval of mifepristone, one of two medications commonly used in medication abortions. The Supreme Court will be hearing oral arguments in this case on March 26.

Take action:
* Join Planned Parenthood supporters and allied organizations at the Supreme Court on March 26, 9 a.m., for a rally to defend medication abortion. Register here if you're coming to the rally from Baltimore and would like to travel down with our friends from Planned Parenthood of Maryland: [link removed]
* Sign the People's Brief demanding that SCOTUS uphold mifepristone access: [link removed]

2. False Claims Act: Meritless Medicaid litigation

Background:
The state of Texas and an anonymous plaintiff are suing Planned Parenthood Federation of America and the three Planned Parenthood affiliates serving Texas and Louisiana. This case hinges on the utterly false pretense that Planned Parenthood broke the law by improperly accepting Medicaid reimbursements. In a flagrant and preposterous attempt to evict Planned Parenthood from Texas and weaken the organization nationally, to the detriment of thousands in need of health care, Texas is suing for $1.8 billion in penalties — more than 100 times the amount reimbursed.

Take action:

* Add your name to the I'm For Planned Parenthood petition telling Texas that we will always stand for essential care: [link removed]

3. EMTALA case: A threat against emergency medical treatment

Background:
The Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) is a federal law that requires hospitals to provide access to abortion as emergency health care when needed to stabilize a patient. This federal law has been in effect for decades, and state law cannot supersede federal law, but Idaho is trying to prevent hospital ERs from providing this emergency care regardless. The Biden administration is suing Idaho over this issue and the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on April 24.

Take action:

* Keep an eye out for incoming updates on how you can support PPADMV advocacy work ahead of the April hearing.

This month and every month, PPADMV is always looking for new volunteers with a passion for reproductive freedom to help support our work!

ELECTIONS AHEAD
While we're focused this spring on the important court cases above, we're also looking ahead to November, when Maryland voters will have the chance to vote "yes" on a crucial ballot measure to constitutionally protect reproductive freedom in the state.

To learn more about Maryland's ballot measure to protect abortion and why it matters, check out our recent Q&A with PPADMV Executive Director Erin Bradley: [link removed]

UPCOMING EVENTS
We're thrilled to invite dedicated PPADMV supporters like you to two exciting events coming up in the next few weeks. Learn more about each event below!

Wine Down for Women's History Month virtual roundtable on reproductive and disability rights
Thursday, March 28 at 6 p.m.

Join Planned Parenthood Advocates for DC, Maryland & NoVa (PPADMV) and the PPADMV DC Advocates Council for Wine Down for Women’s History Month, a virtual moderated panel focused on the intersection between disability rights and reproductive rights, domestic violence, and human rights.

In this hour-long virtual panel and happy hour, we will discuss the barriers that people with disabilities face to full inclusion in advocacy movements for sexual and reproductive freedom, and why we must proactively include Disability Rights perspectives, as well as race and gender considerations, in order to build successful advocacy movements.

Bring your friends, wine, cheese, and activism for this one-of-a-kind celebration of our power to advocate for sexual and reproductive freedom in a way that is fully inclusive of the Disability Rights community and ALL vulnerable groups.
