Dear John, We could all use a little hope and inspiration right now, so we welcome you to join us in celebrating the 11th Annual International Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV). This celebration, which takes place yearly on March 31, was created by transgender advocate Rachel Crandall in 2009 and has continued to expand across the country and globe ever since. For far too long, transgender and non-binary people have been ignored in conversations both within and outside of the LGBTQ community, or these conversations have focused exclusively on violence and discrimination. TDOV is intended to address this reality by raising awareness about transgender people and celebrating the community’s countless successes and triumphs.
By being proudly visible, transgender and non-binary people are able to live authentically, which inspires courage in others to be their true selves. TDOV is an opportunity to highlight the many transgender and non-binary people who are building a better world for everyone through the lives they lead every day. All of us at EV are incredibly grateful to work alongside hundreds of transgender and non-binary people across Virginia, each of whom inspire us by the work they do to empower their communities and create a more vibrant, inclusive Commonwealth. While we are unable to celebrate together in-person, there are still opportunities to come together virtually. The Transgender Assistance Program of Virginia and other groups are sponsoring an online event to showcase the work of transgender artists and performers, as well as share messages from the transgender community. Go to the event page to learn more and find out how you can participate. Importantly, TDOV is just one day to draw attention to what should happen all-year-round: transgender people being people being celebrated, visible, and heard. Thank you for taking part in making this a reality! Yours in Solidarity, All of us at Equality Virginia
