John,
Scientists participating in internal research at ExxonMobil determined that the fossil fuel industry would have devastating effects on our environment — in 1970. That’s right: leaders of the fossil fuel industry have known just how catastrophic their business is for decades.
Since that discovery, Big Fossil Fuel has spent billions of dollars on a disinformation campaign of epic proportions. These corporations have used their wealth to silence activists who spoke out against dangers of fossil fuels and to elect climate change deniers at every level of government.
Fossil fuel companies knew they were worsening the climate crisis and chose to deny science and lie to the public. Sign now to hold the fossil fuel industry accountable.
This deception has cost us valuable time that we can’t get back. Had we known about this research when it became available, we could have already reversed climate change and saved millions of lives and preserved natural wonders.
But we can still hold the fossil fuel industry accountable for its lies: just like the fossil fuel industry, major tobacco companies concealed the dangerous health consequences of smoking — even though they were aware of them. The Department of Justice ruled that Big Tobacco had broken laws and violated the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. Protections and regulations of tobacco were put in places that have saved an untold amount of lives. The DOJ has the power to take action again and hold these corporations accountable.
For far too long — over 50 years — the fossil fuel industry has used illegal methods and blatant lies to detract from a devastating global crisis. The entire fossil fuel industry must be held accountable.
Sign the petition to the Department of Justice: Hold the fossil fuel industry accountable.
Let’s fight for our planet together — while we still can.
Thank you,
Democratic Values
