Dear John,

This month, Freedom House executives and trustees visited imprisoned Guatemalan journalist José Rubén Zamora at a military prison in Guatemala City.

Zamora is Guatemala’s famous political prisoner, the founder of the newspaper El Periódico, which made its name by exposing corruption in the ruling classes. He was imprisoned on dubious charges, aimed at intimidating an outspoken critic of the powerful political, economic, military, and organized crime groups that make up the country’s power structure.

Yet even as the original case against him was dismissed last year, he remains in prison, as prosecutors seem determined to keep him locked up while he awaits an opportunity to clear his name in a retrial.

Bulgaria Should Not Deport Saudi Activist Abdulrahman al-Khalidi

Freedom House joined other organizations in calling on Bulgarian authorities to halt Saudi activist Abdulrahman al-Khalidi's imminent deportation to Saudi Arabia. If deported, al-Khalidi would be at real risk of torture and other serious human rights violations, and should be released and reconsidered for international protection in a fair asylum procedure.
