Hi Reader,
One thing you won’t find on ProPublica’s homepage are the same stories the rest of the media is chasing. That’s because we don’t report what you already know, and you can get that stuff from a ton of different places that have well-oiled 24-hour news machines.
Our newsroom has one singular focus: publishing investigative journalism that’s well-researched, nonpartisan, fact-checked and devoted to revealing what’s going on behind the scenes with our elected officials, government institutions, big corporations and more. In the past few weeks, we’ve published:
- An investigation into a quadruple murder in Oklahoma that shows how the Chinese underworld has come to dominate the booming illicit marijuana trade, fortifying its rise as a global powerhouse with alleged ties to China’s authoritarian regime.
- A new story in our series on railroad safety that explores how, thanks to government loopholes, rail companies haven’t been scrutinized by the Federal Railroad Administration for scores of alleged worker injuries and at least two deaths.
- A report that revealed that, as record-setting blazes grow more common, poor compensation is spurring an exodus of wildland firefighters, thinning America’s last line of defense against fires.
Investigations like these are time-consuming and expensive. We’re able to produce this kind of journalism because of readers like you. As a nonprofit newsroom, we rely on donations from individuals for the majority of our funding. Today, I’m asking you to join ProPublica with a donation of any amount before our spring member drive ends tomorrow.
Our members’ financial support gives us a dependable source of funding, and that matters for an organization like ours — many of our investigations can take months or even years to fully report. We need folks like you to stand with us.
Thanks so much,
Tova Genesen
