Creating a national housing strategy to increase affordability
Housing in the US has reached a crisis point. The number of people experiencing homelessness has hit a record high, more than half of renters are cost-burdened, and mortgage interest rates are at their highest since 2000.
What are policymakers doing about it? The Biden administration proposed three new actions to address the high costs of buying a home in this month’s State of the Union address. And in a follow up on this agenda, Urban held an event with National Economic Council Director Lael Brainard discussing the administration’s housing plans and additional strategies to address housing affordability.
These conversations underline the need for a federal housing approach that can create affordable homeownership opportunities, drive down rental costs, and promote equity.
