We are Brady: United Against Gun Violence

Following a tragic week of gun violence in America, people across the country are asking themselves “what can I do to stop this?” We at Brady know the solutions. In the spirit of our namesakes [[link removed]] Jim and Sarah Brady, we’ve been working for over 45 years to prevent gun violence in America. We know Americans can find common ground in common-sense solutions, like expanded background checks [[link removed]] , an assault weapons ban [[link removed]] , and extreme risk laws [[link removed]] . What’s missing? We just need our representatives to have the courage and conviction to act.

That’s where you come in.

Now is the time for every person across America to join the movement to end our country’s gun violence epidemic. Thanks to your help, here’s what we’ve been up to these past few days.
We’ve driven more than 10,000 calls to Sen. Mitch McConnell’s office to demand immediate action. Keep. it. up! Text “emergency” to 877-877 to call now.

Brady members and grassroots chapters are organizing rallies and events across the country. Find or organize a Brady event near you. [link removed]

We worked with partner organizations to build a BRAND NEW website that activists can use to find and attend local town hall events where they can get loud for gun safety. Visit gunsafetytownhalls.org.

Remembering Jim Brady on the Anniversary of His Death

Last weekend marked five years since the death of our fearless leader, Jim “the Bear” Brady. Jim, and his loving wife, Sarah, made it their life-long goal to pass Brady Background Checks after a gunman shot Jim in the head during an attempted assassination on President Ronald Reagan. The bullet fired from the gunman’s chamber followed Jim for the rest of his life. And after Jim’s passing, doctors confirmed that it was the gunshot wound 33 years prior that caused his death.

Jim will forever be remembered for spearheading the lifesaving Brady Bill, which to this day has stopped more than 3 million illegal gun sales. We couldn't be more proud to bear his name and continue his work to end gun violence.

Please take a moment to honor Jim’s legacy. Watch our dedication video to Jim and Sarah’s life-long fight against gun violence. [[link removed]]

We’re Denouncing White Supremacy and Demanding Action to #DisarmHate

The tragedy in El Paso was motivated by hate. Time and time again, we see how easy access to guns makes hate lethal. This week, we joined our partners in rallying outside the White House to say no more to hate crimes and white supremacy in America. Hand-in-hand with diverse coalition groups and hundreds of activists, we denounced [[link removed]] President Trump’s hateful and divisive rhetoric. Brady President Kris Brown demanded Sen. McConnell immediately call the Senate back into session to vote on legislation that will keep guns out of dangerous hands.

Good news: Our activism is working! On Thursday, Sen. McConnell announced he will hold a debate around gun safety legislation when Congress returns from August recess, but Americans cannot wait any longer. Take action —DEMAND Sen. McConnell call the Senate back from recess to pass lifesaving legislation now! [[link removed]]

One Year of Our Program to #EndFamilyFire

August 8 marked the one-year anniversary of our End Family Fire program! Family fire, which is a shooting involving an improperly stored gun, kills eight children and teens every day. On August 8, or 8-8, we worked to draw awareness to this statistic and how we can all play a part to #EndFamilyFire. Our End Family Fire program drives social change and save lives by educating gun owners and non-gun owners alike about safe gun storage. Learn more about our End Family Fire program! Gun Violence Prevention (GVP) Hero of the Week

Andre and Jordan Anchondo were killed in the El Paso shooting, but not before they bravely shielded their infant son [[link removed]] who survived the shooting. Jordan cradled her son in her arms, while Andre shielded both his wife and son. No family should ever have to suffer from losing a loved one to senseless violence.

Brady Quote of the Week

“For all Americans, make no mistake, we must vote in every election leading to and including 2020 as if our lives are on the line—because they are. Gun owners and non-gun owners need to make their voices heard and demand that every community is free from gun violence.”— Brady President Kris Brown [[link removed]]
