In Celebration of Women’s History Month 2024
Women who advocate for equity, diversity, and inclusion
Dear John,
Women's History Month traces its beginnings back to the first International Women's Day in 1911. But it was not until 1987 that Congress designated the month of March 1987 as “Women’s History Month.” Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women’s History Month. Since 1995, presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as “Women’s History Month.”
We are especially excited about this year’s Women’s History Month theme:
" Women who advocate for equity, diversity, and inclusion .”
All women - trans women, cis women, women of color - are vital members of the movement. The members of the DPO Womxn’s Caucus wholeheartedly welcome this annual celebration as a special time of historical remembrance. It's also an important time for women to consider what our next steps are in the march to full equality for all women. It's a time for us to celebrate the diversity of our movement and lift up the voices that have historically been underrepresented.
To advance societal changes necessary to achieve our vision of equity, we must reaffirm our commitment to build a truly inclusive movement so that all women are represented.
As the Supreme Court's anti-choice majority wrote in its decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade: "women are not without electoral or political power." We don't need Supreme Court justices to remind us that we wield great political power - but we will certainly be reminding them of this fact in November, when women across Oregon and the United States cast our ballots to elect a government that upholds our freedoms.
Please stand with us, friend, as we continue to build this movement. Stand with us as we assert our political power throughout 2024. And support our work to advocate for equity, diversity, and inclusion here in Oregon.
