John, if we aren’t free to criticize our government, we aren’t free.
That’s why we’ve filed a lawsuit against the Michigan House of Representatives for rules that violate both the United States Constitution and the Michigan Constitution, and I hope I can count on your support today.
What happened?
Michigan House of Representative members are afforded the right to print newsletters for their constituents.
Rep. Matt Maddock drafted a constituent newsletter expressing criticism of Governor Gretchen Whitmer. In fact, Rep. Maddock based his newsletter off of the Declaration of Independence but replacing “King George” with Governor Whitmer’s name and updating the text to the issues of our day.
But speech critical of the sitting Governor proved unacceptable for the Michigan House of Representatives as the House Business Office refused to print and send Rep. Maddock’s newsletter.
That’s right, the Michigan House of Representatives’ Business Office censored an elected official because of the content of his speech!
How did this happen?
Under regulations authorized by the state’s Speaker of the House, the House Business Office actually prohibits a legislator from publishing a newsletter the Business Office subjectively deems “partisan.”
But that is not all…
These speech-chilling regulations also prohibit “comments critical of the institution of the legislature, legislators or other individuals.”
What country are we living in if a legislator elected BY THE PEOPLE IS CENSORED when he tries to tell his constituents the TRUTH about the government’s actions?
I know it sounds crazy that this is happening in America.
But it gets worse…
If Rep. Maddock had praised Governor Whitmer, the ‘rules’ would have allowed that.
This blatant censorship is a slap in the face not just to Michiganders, but to Americans everywhere.
And a clear violation of the United States Constitution!
Free speech is our most sacred right.
And our right to criticize our government is the bedrock of the American experiment—our entire Constitution collapses without it.
That’s why we’re suing on behalf of State Rep. Matt Maddock, and why I hope I can count on your generous, tax-deductible donation today.
If Leftist politicians can silence you in Michigan, they can silence you anywhere.
Rep. Matt Maddock isn’t letting them get away with it.
He’s doing everything in his power to fight for free speech, but he needs your help to do it.
So please consider making a generous, tax-deductible donation to the Center for American Liberty today.
Thank you for your continued support.
