Alzheimer’s Association Staff and Advocates Dropped by Councilmember White’s Office to Share Impact of Alzheimer's in DC.

Tuesday, March 19, 2024

Alzheimer’s Association staff members and advocates dropped by Councilmember Trayon White’s office to discuss the growing number of people aged 65 and older with Alzheimer’s in the District of Columbia. Data from the Alzheimer’s Impact Movement’s report states that an estimated 9,000 residents will be living with Alzheimer’s by the year 2025 and a disproportionate number of them reside in Wards 7 and 8.

The Alzheimer’s Association proposes to establish a Dementia Care Specialist Program at DACL within the Department of Aging and Community Living to provide support to people with Alzheimer’s and their families. Wisconsin, Georgia, Indiana and Maryland have already established Dementia Care Specialist Programs.

Members of Education Reform Now (ERN) visit with the Office of Councilmember Trayon White.

Friday, March 15, 2024

On Pi Day members of Education Reform Now (ERN) dropped by Councilmember Trayon White’s Office to advocate for reforms in math education in the District of Columbia. We learned from their visit that 79% of DCPS and DCPCS parents are ‘keenly focused’ on the significance of math. In fact, 87% believe that the Mayor and DC Council should aggressively invest more in cultivating math education. Moreover, 70% of parents support the introduction of Math Innovation and Research Hubs within schools to increase the quality of math education and outcomes. ERN suggested that the District of Columbia create a task force that would work discover even more evidence-based solutions to combat flailing math literacy across the city and especially in Ward 8 where they were quoted as noting that only 8% of students are math literate.

As a generous gesture in recognition of Pi Day, advocates brought fresh baked pies for Council staff.

The Council had been excitedly anticipating the arrival of the Mayor’s Proposed Budget and public briefing on March 20th and 22nd.

On the Friday, March 15
th, Chairman Mendelson notified Councilmembers and staff that the budget has been delayed and the briefing cancelled until further notice.
