Dear John,
One of the largest drivers of deforestation around the world is the expansion of commercial agriculture. Most of this land-clearing is illegal—fueling nature loss, climate change, corruption, and crime. The US must take steps to protect forests, the climate, and communities by stopping illegal deforestation.
The bipartisan FOREST Act is landmark legislation that would require companies to remove illegal deforestation from the products they bring to the United States.
Under the FOREST Act, importers would be required to trace where their products come from and confirm that they are legally produced, helping ensure they are not contributing to the illegal destruction of forests, human rights abuses, and other criminal activity. This bipartisan legislation is a key step to curb global emissions and conserve the world's forests and other natural ecosystems. |
