Friends,
You’ve probably heard that quote from Mister Rogers about “looking for the helpers” – the idea that when things are tough, it can be heartening to look around and notice all the people who are helping solve the problem.
I think the same thing applies to looking for good news. In a media landscape that tends to hype up the worst case scenarios and feed on our fears, it’s worth taking a moment to focus on the good things that are happening all around us.
Because I can promise you this – there are good things happening. Flowers are blooming (hello, cherry blossom season in DC 🌸), cute babies are being born, young people are finding their voice and their way in the world.
I want to be clear: Of course pretty flowers don’t counteract the very real challenges and hardships in our country and across the world. There is no trivializing global human rights atrocities or threats to our foundational rights here at home.
But we need connection, we need good news, and we need joy – especially when the world is demanding our attention and energy to resist and fight back.
Not to sound overly sappy, but I think it’s true that hope is the path to progress.
So I want to know: What’s your good news? What are you seeing or feeling that’s bringing you small (or big!) joy?
I hope you’ll reply to this email and share your thoughts with me and my team.
Together, we can not only remind one another to look for the good – we can also create the good.
Thanks, and talk soon.
