Yesterday, The U.S. Supreme Court declined to block Texas Senate Bill 4 (SB4), empowering the state to implement immigration enforcement– only for a Fifth Circuit Court panel to issue a new order blocking state enforcement again, with a court hearing set for today. SB4 makes illegal immigration a state crime and gives Texas authorities the power to arrest migrants who are suspected of crossing the border illegally and charge them with a class B misdemeanor. In February, Congressman Sessions joined 45 other members in sending an amicus brief in support of SB 4 and Texas. Despite the rapidly shifting landscape, the Supreme Court’s decision signals a favorable outcome for the State of Texas.
“Throughout American history, Texas law enforcement has played a role in securing our southern border,” said U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions. “The U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in favor of SB4 recognizes the State of Texas’ duty and authority to protect its citizens. They should be given the means to mitigate the multiple nationwide crises created by the Biden Administration’s negligence. I am proud of Governor Abbott and the State of Texas for leading this fight. In Congress, I will continue to hold the President accountable until he chooses to enforce federal law.”
