This is the worst fear for every family living paycheck-to-paycheck in our
country: Something happens, and you lose everything. I know because I
lived it.

For my family, that fear became a reality when my little sister was born
with a heart condition that required surgeries at a hospital over 100
miles away from home.

Within months, my parents were bankrupted by medical bills.

We relied on the generosity of our community to make it through that time.
Friends, neighbors, members of our church — everyday people who had no
more than we did, taking care of each other when times got tough.

That’s something Josh Hawley could never understand.
