Hello fellow climate activists,
350 Chicago is proud to announce the organization’s State Divestment campaign will be joining forces with 3rd Act Illinois and Climate Reality Project Chicago to form a newly invigorated umbrella collaborative: Climate Safe Pensions Illinois: Divesting for a Fossil-Free Future!
Our partnership with 3rd Act and Climate Reality Project is merely the beginning of the process. With the new collaborative group now formed, volunteers for 350 Chicago will have a great opportunity to contribute to building the infrastructure for and participating in the revamped state campaign.

The Divestment Movement is not just a symbolic act. According to Stop The Money Pipeline, since the Paris Agreement was adopted in 2015, big asset managers such as banks, insurance companies and pension funds have provided well-over $1.4 trillion to the fossil fuel industry. The fossil fuel corporations driving the climate crisis depend on this support for their continued existence. By funneling billions of dollars into the oil, gas and coal sectors, pension funds are gambling with our public employees’ money, spending tax-payer dollars to support pollution in our communities, and threatening our climate.
The good news: across the planet Fossil Fuel Divestments Over the Last Decade Have Now Reached $41 Trillion. As of December 2023, more than 1,600 institutions including universities, pension funds and governments have now divested from fossil fuels. Through 350 Chicago’s 7 years of campaigning, the city of Chicago joined the movement by divesting $70 million dollars from the City’s operational budget, a clear victory for the climate and the planet!
In Illinois, we can make a difference in fighting the climate crisis by advocating to policy makers and educating the public about the advantages of divesting from fossil fuel assets. Come join us at 350 Chicago as we launch our new initiative: Climate Safe Pensions Illinois: Divesting for a Fossil-Free Future!
