Dear supporters, We hope this message finds you and your family in good health. Like many of you, we are closely monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic’s spread across the United States. We encourage everyone to stay informed and practice good public health precautions as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control. While our work may have to shift online while we all practice social distancing, we are not letting up in our mission. Here’s what we were up to in March: We are grateful for everyone’s support of SchoolSafety.gov and the new Federal School Safety Clearinghouse in the wake of last month’s launch. Every school district in America can do things today to make their schools safer, and Stand with Parkland is proud to have championed this excellent resource that is a one-stop shop for those interested in improving their schools. Teachers, administrators, law enforcement, lawmakers, and families all have a role to play to make sure solutions are implemented in our schools. Despite these successes, we were stunned and frustrated to learn that the Florida Legislature failed to pass HB 7065, the next bill in a series of common-sense school safety laws, to enhance the process started by the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Public Safety Act of 2018 and SB 7030 in 2019 and better protect Florida children and school employees. This year’s bill, HB 7065 had overwhelming bipartisan support and represented the recommendations of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission created to assist Florida’s legislators and make needed changes in the wake of the tragic murder of our loved ones. Governor DeSantis should consider convening a Special Session to help pass this critical legislation, recommended after hundreds of hours of expert testimony and presentations on making our schools safer was heard. As spring approaches, we hope that you will consider honoring the lives lost by wearing your support of Stand with Parkland proudly.
