Dear Friend,
We need to do more than defeat Donald Trump. At this point, the problem is bigger than one political figure; our task is to defeat Trumpism itself.
Trumpism doesn’t lead us forward but rather backwards, to a nostalgic fiction of a past that Donald Trump seems very little to understand. The past can instruct us, and it does — I certainly speak about our nation’s history — but the past is not a destination. It inspires and motivates, but our vision should be of a world much better than any we have known before.
Trump provokes fear and hatred. But the people I have met as I have traveled the country are not haters; they are good and decent people who are trying their best to make it in an increasingly fearful world. Their greatest yearning, in fact, is for a politics that matches what they know to be true in our hearts. |
Our campaign seeks to harness the goodness and the decency of the American people. Whereas Trump speaks to a lower part of the human brain in order to build up his own power, I have sought to inspire the better angels of our nature in order to help create a more beautiful world.
While Trump promises to “Make America great again,” his rhetoric has never matched his policies. While he told supporters he wouldn't cut Social Security, his budgets as President would have cut $845 billion from Medicare and $25 billion from Social Security. Trump did not improve conditions for working people. The minimum wage didn’t rise, more people went bankrupt from medical bankruptcy, and there was more stagnation on environmental preservation.

In order to override the nefarious influence of Trumpism, we need to fundamentally address the ubiquitous economic struggles that so many Americans live with today. The Democratic Party needs to unapologetically push for creating permanent material improvements to American’s lives: from universal healthcare to a living wage, from subsidized child care to a a just transition to the green economy of the future, and more. Failure to fight for people this way means we are failing to fight for the country. And in that failure, Trumpism will flourish.
Only a spiritual and economic transformation will point the way to a sustainable future for America. Our campaign is not a campaign to bring a single politician into power, but rather a campaign to bring the people of this country into power. I have learned so much this last year, not only about politics but about people. I remain on the trail in order to turn what I have learned into something that can genuinely make a difference.
I deeply appreciate you being with me on this journey. Please continue to support the political awakening that I can feel happening wherever we go. |
