Friend,
Last month Senators Warnock and Durbin reintroduced the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and we couldn’t be more excited! After the gutting of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, we’ve seen a rise of voter suppression laws across the country targeting people of color. Not since the Jim Crow era have we seen such brazenly racist attacks on our right to vote, but the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act will ensure that no voters are kept from the ballot box on account of their race.
The Act will establish new criteria for preventing discrimination in voting, mandate higher standards of nationwide transparency for voting law and policy changes, and more important steps that will ensure that racism plays no role in people’s access to the vote. It’s 2024 and it’s time to stop racist voter suppression and restore the Voting Rights Act to its full potential once and for all.
The late, great Congressman John Lewis dedicated his entire life to fighting against racial injustice and ensuring that the voice of every single American is heard. He would be so disappointed to see the restrictive, racist voter suppression laws across our country today. We need to act now to uphold his legacy and create a democracy that works for all of us.
