This month, the Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF/FCE) is calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland to ensure that funds for a Pan-Canadian School Food Program are included in April’s federal Budget 2024. 

The Coalition for Healthy School Food is proud to support the Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF/FCE).

This year’s virtual Great Big Crunch was incredible! 

On March 7, we had over 20,000 participants join the virtual event, including many schools and classrooms who came out to show their support for healthy school food programs across Canada. The Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, Jenna Sudds, also participated and spoke at the event. You can watch the full event here.

If you missed it, don’t worry! The Great Big Crunch is still happening all throughout the month of March. So far, over 220,000 have signed up for this year’s Great Big Crunch! We invite you to organize your own Crunch, at your school, with friends, at the office with colleagues or at home.

Let’s continue to show our support for all school food programs across Canada!

The Collectif Quebecois of the Coalition for Healthy School Food welcomed the investment of $50 million over five years announced in the 2024-2025 provincial budget dedicated for school food ($34 million in food service and $16 million in food literacy) on Monday. Despite a tight budget, we are pleased to see that the government is taking another step towards providing access to healthy food in schools.

However, the Collectif québécois continues to urge the government to make a formal commitment to introduce a universal school food program for Quebec. To put in place a sustainable solution that is accessible to all children across the province, the government must sit down at the table with the key stakeholders to work towards the deployment stages of such a program and think about implementation solutions based on what already exists and that respect the unique characteristics of different environments.

In the 2024 Nova Scotia Budget announcement, the Nova Scotia Government announced an investment of $18.8 million dollars dedicated towards a universal school lunch program. 

This 4-year program will build to an investment of $100 million annual investment by 2027-2028 and will begin with elementary schools in the public school system. 

Lindsay Corbin, Coordinator of the Nova Scotia Chapter of the Coalition for Healthy School Food, welcomes this exciting news. In her interview with CBC’s Steve Sutherland, she explains the potential impact of this investment on families in Nova Scotia and how it will transform the current patchwork of school food availability in Nova Scotia.

In February, the Alberta Government announced that they will provide a one-time $5 million dollar grant to their school food program. This investment will provide more students with healthy school meals and snacks in this school year. 

The Coalition for Healthy School Food welcomes this announcement and we’re pleased to see the Alberta Government prioritize school food programs and ensure that children and youth have access to proper nutrition. We hope that the Alberta Government continues to invest in school food programs and support their students and their families.

The Indigenous School Food Circle would like to extend an invitation for their March 26 webinar, at 1pm ET, focusing on Advocating to the Federal Government for Investment in Indigenous School Food Programs.

This 1.5 hour event aims to share efforts made by organizations and individuals to advocate for federal funding for school food programs in First Nations, Metis, and Inuit communities.

We are pleased to have the following speakers share their experiences:

• Melanie Bennett, Yukon First Nations Education Directorate
• Leona Brown, Indigenous Advocate, Centre for Family Equity
• Debbie Field, Coalition for Healthy School Food

After the presentations, there will be a space for discussion about how anyone can promote federal investment in Indigenous school food programs. Participants will be encouraged to ask questions and share their ideas and/or their advocacy experience.

We are humbled by the significant progress made by advocacy groups in this regard, and we are appreciative of the organizations that have already developed and communicated their plans and budgets for this cause.

This will be a publicly recorded event and will be available on our channels to watch and share after.

Cette année, la Grande croquée virtuelle a été incroyable ! 

Le 7 mars, plus de 20 000 personnes ont participé à l'événement virtuel, dont de nombreuses écoles et salles de classe qui sont venues manifester leur soutien aux programmes de saine alimentation scolaire dans tout le Canada. La ministre des Familles, des Enfants et du Développement social, Jenna Sudds, a également participé à l'événement et y a pris la parole.

Si vous l'avez manqué, ne vous inquiétez pas ! La Grande croquée se poursuit tout au long du mois de mars. Jusqu'à présent, plus de 220 000 personnes se sont inscrites pour la Grande croquée de cette année ! Continuons à montrer notre soutien à tous les programmes d'alimentation scolaire à travers le Canada !

Le Collectif québécois de la Coalition salue l'investissement de 50 millions de dollars sur cinq ans annoncé dans le budget provincial 2024-2025 lundi pour l’alimentation scolaire (34 M$ pour le service alimentaire et 16 M$ pour la littératie alimentaire). Malgré un budget serré, nous sommes heureux de constater que le gouvernement fait un pas de plus vers l'accès à la saine alimentation à l'école.

Toutefois, le Collectif québécois continue de presser le gouvernement de s’engager formellement à mettre en place un programme d'alimentation scolaire universel pour le Québec. Afin d'arriver à mettre en place une solution durable et accessible à tous les enfants à travers la province, le gouvernement doit s'asseoir à la table avec les acteurs clés pour travailler vers les étapes de déploiement d'un tel programme et réfléchir à des solutions d'opérationnalisation basées sur ce qui existe déjà et qui respectent les particularités des différents milieux.

Dans l'annonce du budget provincial de 2024, le gouvernement de la Nouvelle-Écosse a annoncé un investissement de 18,8 millions de dollars consacré à un programme universel de repas à l'école. 

Ce programme de quatre ans atteindra un investissement annuel de 100 millions de dollars d'ici 2027-2028 et commencera par les écoles primaires du système scolaire public. 

Lindsay Corbin, coordonnatrice de la branche néo-écossaise de la Coalition pour une saine alimentation scolaire, se réjouit de cette excellente nouvelle. Dans son entrevue avec Steve Sutherland, de la CBC, elle explique l'impact potentiel de cet investissement sur les familles de la Nouvelle-Écosse et la façon dont il transformera l'actuelle mosaïque d'aliments disponibles dans les écoles de la province.

En février, le gouvernement de l'Alberta a annoncé qu'il accorderait une subvention unique de 5 millions de dollars à son programme d'alimentation scolaire. Cet investissement permettra d'offrir à un plus grand nombre d'élèves des repas et des collations sains à l'école au cours de la présente année scolaire. 

La Coalition pour une saine alimentation scolaire se félicite de cette annonce et nous sommes heureux de voir que le gouvernement de l'Alberta accorde la priorité aux programmes d'alimentation scolaire et veille à ce que les enfants et les jeunes aient accès à une alimentation saine. Nous espérons que le gouvernement de l'Alberta continuera à investir dans les programmes d'alimentation scolaire et à soutenir les élèves et leurs familles.

Le Cercle Autochtone de l'alimentation scolaire vous invite à son webinaire le 26 mars de 13h-14h30 (heure de l'Est), qui portera sur le plaidoyer auprès du gouvernement fédéral pour l'investissement dans les programmes d'alimentation scolaire autochtones. Ce webinaire aura lieu en anglais.

Cet événement d'une heure et demie a pour but de partager les efforts déployés par des organisations et des individus pour plaider en faveur d'un financement fédéral dans des programmes d’alimentation scolaire dans les communautés des Premières Nations, des Métis et des Inuits.

Nous avons le plaisir d'accueillir les conférencières suivantes pour qu'elles partagent leurs expériences :

Nous sommes très touchés par les progrès significatifs réalisés par les groupes de défense des droits à cet égard, et nous sommes reconnaissants envers les organisations qui ont déjà élaboré et communiqué leurs plans et leurs budgets pour cette cause.
