Dear John,
When someone tells you who they are, believe them.
And when Trump tells you he’ll be a dictator on “Day One,” you’d better believe he’d be a dictator on Day Two as well, and every day after that.
How could Trump actually do this? His actions to date show that he’s already well on the way -- and he has filled his party with sycophants who even now are helping him lay the groundwork for the promised totalitarian one-man rule.
In the past week, Trump has warned of a “bloodbath” if he’s not elected, promised again to release violent Jan 6 criminals, claimed immigrants aren’t people, and called for the prosecution of Liz Cheney. These are warning signs of fascism.
Join me as I walk us through the five steps a fascist leader must take to turn a democracy into a dictatorship. Then share the video with others who need to see how Trump is carefully connecting all the dots.
Democracy is by its nature fragile. It’s chilling to see how Trump has already laid out his plans to achieve all five steps to gaining and maintaining absolute power.
He’s already argued in court that as former president, he deserves “absolute immunity.” His affinity for absolutist dictators is well established, along with his invitation to Putin to invade Eastern Europe. His full-throated advocacy of political violence and willingness to create a police state, jail the opposition, and to silence dissent fill the standard Trump stump speech.
We can’t sound the alarms loudly enough. The stakes are enormous. Once a nation has lost its democratic freedoms, they can’t easily be won back.
When the threat of fascism appears, we must do everything in our power to stop it.
