I’ve been in office a year now. I’ve not gone viral once–that’s by design. Every week that I show up to Washington, I bring all the energy I can muster to solve the biggest challenges facing our country, not gain the most likes on social media. I coined a phrase my first year: I’m bringing BORING back to Congress. Whether it’s pouring over reports from the Government Accountability Office or talking about FAA regulations, I’m here to do the work, the boring stuff.

As I settle in to watch floor speeches from my colleagues, at some point, it dawns on me…oh, this is not about problem-solving; this is about going viral later. Sometimes, I feel like the House of Representatives could actually have its own reality TV show–The Real House Members of Washington, DC.

The Congressional obsession with social media over solving problems doesn’t affect everyone. I have great colleagues on both sides of the aisle who are there to do the work, but there are fewer and fewer of us.

I continue to show up to do the work–supporting working families, championing our small businesses and local economies, and making sure our women and girls don’t have fewer rights than our grandmothers.

Not going viral has its costs, though—folks who grandstand make Big Money through their online fundraising. While I might not be a TikTok sensation, the work I do in Congress is essential for good governance, and the ability to win my seat is essential for a good government majority.
