** Students and staff get STOP THE BLEED® training

UofL Health visited Farnsley Middle School Friday to give STOP THE BLEED® training.

Participants used fake body parts with fake blood to simulate real scenarios.

The program teaches students how to pack wounds that are profusely bleeding or to apply a tourniquet if they can. While the training was focused for the healthcare science students, school staff were invited to participate as well.

“I feel like it’s important for not only students, but staff to know if they stumble upon someone and they’re profusely bleeding. How to stop it while we wait for emergency personnel to get there,” Healthcare Science Teach Nicole Blair said. This was the first time STOP THE BLEED® has been taught at Farnsley.

** Every classroom in Ohio County Schools now fully equipped with “Stop the Bleed” kits

Every classroom in Ohio County is now fully equipped with “Stop the Bleed” kits.

Ohio County Schools has had these kits in a centralized location in every building, but after a recent school safety assessment it was recommended that every classroom have a “Stop the Bleed” kit in them, as well. Teachers and students have been trained to use them as part of the schools’ ALICE training. “We always say it’s not a matter of if, it’s when it might happen, whether it’s active shooter, flooding, or any type of disaster. Every time you look at the news, there’s an active shooter somewhere in this country. So, it feels good to me to be able to know that now all our schools are prepared to be taught how to handle it. We’re giving them the equipment and now you know, hopefully we’ll never have to use those kits. But, in the event it does occur, we’re going to be ready for it.”- Lou Vargo, EMA Director Ohio County

Each kit is equipped with gauze, tourniquets, gloves, and bandages – everything to fully pack a wound in case of an emergency. The kits were provided through grant funding and were packaged by Wheeling Medical Supply.

** ThedaCare continues efforts through ‘Stop the Bleed’ program

In 2018, ThedaCare launched STOP THE BLEED® in their community, a nationwide initiative to teach bystanders how to help in a bleeding incident before professionals arrive on the scene. More than five years later, officials are celebrating the nearly 2,000 community members who have been trained.

“So often, the first responder to bleeding emergencies is a bystander or family member, not a trained emergency medical responder,” explained Dr. David Schultz, a General Surgeon and Medical Director of ThedaCare’s Level II Trauma Center. “This is why it is so important to train community members how to care for bleeding emergencies. The faster bleeding is stopped, the more opportunities there are for better outcomes for that person.”

The STOP THE BLEED® education program is modeled after the United States Army’s effort to equip soldiers with trauma supplies and the knowledge to use them.

On March 12, 2024, ThedaCare trained nearly 100 nursing students at UW-Oshkosh. This training has taken place for the past several years, and is one of the largest groups experiencing Stop the Bleed education.

** National Good Samaritan Day Story: Teen boy uses STOP THE BLEED® training to save elderly neighbor

In honor of National Good Samaritan Day on March 13, the Des Moines Register compiled a list of our most recent inspiring moments involving Good Samaritans, including a Iowa teen who used STOP THE BLEED® skills to save a life:

Blockton, Iowa resident Pat Kemery, who is 81 years old, lives alone since her husband passed away. Her 15-year-old neighbor ended up saving her life when she fell off her four-wheeler in June and got trapped under the vehicle.

Kemery accidentally hit the vehicle’s throttle with her hand, throwing her off and onto her stomach, trapped under the vehicle.

“Nobody’s going to find me here,” she thought, until Weston Drake came along.

He used skills he learned during Stop the Bleed training to save her, he said. During training, he learned how to treat a stab wound, a bullet wound and bad scratches.

** Whiteside Tactical Solutions sponsors STOP THE BLEED® at Georgia High School

Whiteside Tactical Solutions sponsored STOP THE BLEED® at South GwinnettHigh School in Snellville, GA for 127 students with the help of their HOSA chapter officers. This was a two day event that began with students first participating in the lecture portion of STOP THE BLEED®. During day one students were taught all of the pertinent steps to be able to effectively STOP THE BLEED®. Students were taught about the importance of scene safety, how to determine if someone is suffering from life threatening bleeding, how to apply an Israeli bandage, how to apply a tourniquet, and how to pack a wound effectively. After the lecture portion students were given the opportunity to practice all of the above. Then on day two students took the written test and put their skills into practice.

HOSA Officers ofSouth Gwinnett High School helped teach students the skills and were there during the assessment of actual skills. HOSA Chapter Officers were able to correct, re-instruct and then guide students to success. At the end of day two South Gwinnett High School had 127 students who were not only trained in STOP THE BLEED® but who felt they could apply their knowledge if ever needed.
