Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month ? March 2024
"A World of Opportunities,? this year?s Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month theme opens every door to those who have a developmental disability.
Many agencies use the theme to spotlight and discover opportunities during the month of March. This year you can find increased support for integrated community living, expanded options for accessible transportation, enhanced understanding and enforcement of accessibility standards in the built public environment, and more examples of opportunities waiting to be discovered!
At the national level, the Administration for Community Living (ACL), a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services oversees the State Councils on Developmental Disabilities of which there are 56 in the United States and its territories. Texas is included in that group by the Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities (TCDD) and their hard-working staff members and a dedicated council of volunteers appointed by Governor Abbott.
They follow the ACL mission: ?Maximize the independence, well-being, and health of older adults, people with disabilities across the lifespan, and their families and caregivers.?
In Governor Abbott?s Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in Texas Proclamation, he reminds us that ?Texas is better off when "all" citizens can flourish, so we must do everything in our power to facilitate personal and professional success for people with developmental disabilities....Further, people with developmental disabilities who are involved in their community generally live longer, healthier lives and are more likely to give back. In sum, when inclusion is a reality, the entire state thrives.?
Join with TCDD in helping raise awareness of the ?world of opportunities? for persons with disabilities in Texas. For a broad look at issues impacting Texans with developmental disabilities, visit the TCDD website [ [link removed] ].
Other agencies have developed resources to further the collective exercise to take advantage of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.
The National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities has many opportunities for the month including the announcement of their annual conference in July. Do not miss the NACDD website [ [link removed] ].
